Corrupt Hosts File Causes HTTP Error 403

Friday, 30 May 2003

The Hosts file is a text file which is stored in the systemroot\system32\drivers\etc folder and is used to map host names to IP addresses. If the Hosts file get corrupted then Internet Explorer may display an HTTP error 403 (forbidden) when trying to access any website using the HTTP protocol.

  • A Hosts file containing the names of common advert servers, mapped to the local IP address, can be downloaded from http://www.accs-net.com/hosts. This blocks adverts and prevents the listed servers from knowing which websites you are viewing.
